EDC's S-Series are software-defined columns and square arrays. Every transducer has its own amplifier and processing channel, so one cabinet forms up to four independent beams — each shaped horizontally and vertically from 1° to 120° — and clusters behave as a single source. Prices from US$7,044.

What beam steering does

Direct sound reaches the listener before the room does.

A steerable loudspeaker controls its coverage electronically instead of by cabinet shape. Energy is placed on the audience and kept off walls and ceilings, so reverberation, echoes and spill fall without turning the level down.

What software-defined adds

Three dimensions, four beams, one inventory item.

Most steerable columns control one axis. EDC shapes coverage horizontally, vertically and in depth, produces four independent beams per cabinet, and does it without shading drivers down — every transducer contributes full bandwidth whether the beam is narrow or wide. Coverage changes are a preset, not a rigging call.

What is a software-defined loudspeaker?
A loudspeaker whose coverage is set in software rather than by cabinet geometry. Every EDC S-Series transducer has its own amplifier and processing channel, so one cabinet can form up to four independent beams, each with its own shape, level, delay and source. When the room or the use changes, the coverage is re-aimed from the app instead of by moving hardware.
How many beams can one EDC loudspeaker produce?
Up to four independent beams from a single SC or SQ cabinet, each shaped horizontally and vertically. The SS-1 and SS-3 subwoofers produce two. One SC-60 mounted above a video wall can cover the seating in front of it with one beam and the whole room with another.
How is this different from a steerable column?
Most steerable columns control coverage on one axis — usually vertical — and rely on the cabinet's physical width for horizontal coverage. EDC's algorithms shape the wavefront in three dimensions, so horizontal and vertical coverage, skew and tilt are all set in software, with every transducer contributing full bandwidth in narrow and wide configurations alike. Are the speakers for speech, music or both?
Both. The S-Series uses 1-inch soft-dome high-frequency drivers and 5-inch mid-range drivers with no compression drivers, so tonal character is preserved at any level. The same cabinets are installed for station announcements, worship services, corporate presentations and live events.
What is the frequency range?
The SC columns are rated 100 Hz to 20 kHz (±3 dB) and the SQ-90 and slim SL columns 80 Hz to 20 kHz. The SS-1 and SS-3 subwoofers extend the system to 25 Hz. Datasheets are on each product page.
How loud are they?
Published figures are 95 dB (SC-30), 101 dB (SC-60) and 104 dB (SC-90) at 10 metres for a single cabinet, and 106 dB at 16 metres for the SQ-90, configuration dependent; cabinets cluster horizontally and vertically to form larger arrays that behave as a single source. Peak and continuous figures with a stated measurement method are being added to every datasheet.
Can they be used outdoors?
A weatherised version of each model is available with stainless-steel and aluminium hardware, a waterproof grille lining and IP65-rated network and power connectors. The enclosure's IEC 60529 rating and operating temperature range are being confirmed for publication; ask us for the current statement before specifying an exposed installation.
Do they take Dante or AES3 digital audio?
Every model has an analogue XLR line input and output as standard, with an optional AES3 stereo input or an RJ45 Dante input. Ethernet control and monitoring is standard. Channel mapping, AES67 mode and clocking details are being documented on the Dante and AES67 page.
How are they mounted?
Columns carry eight M10 points and can be mounted vertically or horizontally with the U-brackets; subwoofers carry sixteen M10 points and a pole socket; the SQ-90 uses side and rear rigging tubes and the touring rigging frame. Rigging drawings are in Resources; working-load limits are being added.
Can the system report faults?
A monitored version reports transducer, thermal and amplifier faults over the network, and the cabinets carry an inbuilt measurement microphone. This is the version specified for transport and voice-alarm applications; the interface is being documented for integrators on the developer pages.
Is there a GLL file for EASE or EASE Focus?
Not yet published. The Pro App exports 3D balloon data per beam and per array for use in EASE today; downloadable GLL files for every model are in preparation and will appear in Resources and the AFMG database.
Is there Architects and Engineers specification text?
Yes — a PDF (v1) covering every S-Series model is in Resources. A corrected, editable version is in preparation.
